The Denver Broncos have made a move in the tight end room as they continue to reduce salaries.
No, this will not have the same impact on the NFL as cutting Justin Simmons, but it is still important.
The Broncos cut TE Chris Manhertz on Friday, freeing up a little more than $2 million in salary cap space.
As Mike Klis notes out above, the exact figure for salary cap savings is $2.12 million. Manhertz was part of the worst tight end room in football last season, but as Klis notes, he wasn’t expected to catch passes.
Manhertz, an outstanding run-blocker, and head coach Sean Payton previously worked together in New Orleans in 2016. He subsequently spent time with Carolina and Jacksonville before arriving in Denver.
Tight end Greg Dulcich had high aspirations for the Broncos in 2023, but he simply couldn’t remain healthy. Adam Trautman was OK in that role, but he is a free agent, and it would be a minor surprise if Payton and GM George Paton brought him back.
The team definitely needs to address the position this offseason, but Manhertz is not in their future plans. And the Broncos saved money in the process.
