NEW ORLEANS (AP) – Linebacker Demario Davis and the New Orleans Saints have reached an agreement on a two-year contract that will run through the 2025 campaign.
The last year of a three-year deal that was scheduled to expire after the 2024 season has been replaced by the agreement, which Saints general manager Mickey Loomis confirmed on Monday.
The rumored $17.5 million deal reduces Davis’ yearly compensation, giving the Saints some relief from the wage ceiling.
During his twelve seasons in the NFL, the 6-foot-2, 248-pound Davis has spent the last six with New Orleans. He played for Cleveland for one season after being selected by the New York Jets in the 2012 draft out of Arkansas State.
Twenty-four special teams stops, three interceptions, 55 passes defensed, eight fumble recoveries, four forced fumbles, and 1,335 tackles (860 solo) are among Davis’ accomplishments. He was chosen for the last two Pro Bowls, is one of just three active players with at least 1,300 stops, and was an All-Pro in 2019.
All 17 games played in the previous season saw Davis start, and he recorded a team-high 121 tackles (74 solo), including 6 1/2 sacks and 12 tackles for loss. Along with forcing and recovering a fumble, he also broke up four passes.
