latest update: Golden State Warriors make Steve Kerr highest paid NBA coach in history

The Golden State Warriors have made Steve Kerr the highest-paid NBA coach in history.

The Warriors and Kerr reached an agreement on Friday for a record two-year, $35 million contract deal, Kerr’s representative Priority Sports confirmed to CNN on Saturday.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski was the first to break the story.

Although San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich earns more every year, ESPN reports that Popovich also acts as the franchise’s president.

The four-time NBA championship-winning coach’s contract was slated to expire following the 2023-24 season. Kerr’s new contract is in line with that of standout player Steph Curry. After this season, the two-time NBA MVP will be in his final two years.

CNN has contacted the Warriors for comment.

The 58-year-old is in his ninth season with the organization, where he has a 502-264 regular season record and a 99-41 playoff record.

The 2015-16 Coach of the Year has led Golden State to six Western Conference crowns and the league’s most wins in a single season (73).

On the floor Friday night, the Warriors (29-26) defeated the (14-42) Charlotte Hornets 97-84 at home, their eighth win in nine games.
