The former 49ers tight end, who was selected in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft by San Francisco, appeared in 65 games.
This previous season, in just 17 games, he managed just three receptions for 32 yards. Woerner was placed on injured reserve after spraining his high ankle. The 26-year-old has caught 11 passes for 120 yards in his career.
That may not sound like much output, but the Falcons don’t need a TE2 who is extremely productive, which is why they cut Jonnu Smith and avoided paying the cap.
Woerner will be expected to play at the Y as a blocking tight end in order to provide Kyle Pitts with more opportunity inside or out wide. He has also played in at least 70% of the Niners’ special teams snaps over the last three years, so his impact in the third phase of the game will be significant.
John FitzPatrick, Tucker Fisk, and Kyle Pitts make up Atlanta’s tight end room. The Falcons are definitely strengthening their rivalry for that position with three tight ends who are first to the block. They won’t require all four, for sure.
