Owner Jerry Jones claims the Dallas Cowboys are “all in” for the 2024 campaign, but every action — or inaction — has suggested a whole different course of action.
The Cowboys had yet another disappointing early playoff exit after three straight seasons with twelve wins. There’s a feeling in the NFL that Jones might have to start over if this group, which has a ton of talent on both sides of the ball, is unable to make a meaningful playoff run in 2024.
In particular, he declined head coach Mike McCarthy’s fifth-year option, meaning there won’t be a coach with greater expectations in 2024.
The Dallas Cowboys, who are struggling to find salary room to acquire new talent, would greatly benefit from a contract extension between Jones and Dak Prescottt, as almost everyone in the league thought would happen. However, as of right now, no agreement has been signed, and it doesn’t seem like the two sides are getting close.
So far this offseason, the Cowboys have lost key players such as tackle Tyron Smith, wide receiver Michael Gallup, running back Tony Pollard, and linebacker Leighton Vander-Esch, to mention a few, and have only added one free agent.
It’s difficult to imagine Prescott succeeding with fewer weapons, less protection, and a defense that lost its coordinator, important position coaches, and a few key role players unless the Dallas Cowboys have a brilliant plan to choose big-time players in the NFL Draft.
Dallas is a squad that can’t afford to do nothing in the offseason and hope for the best, even though CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons remain their two best players on both sides of the ball.
Even though Prescott had a fantastic regular season in 2023, he has always been at his best when he has a true No. 1 wide receiver in Lamb, a dependable tight end, and a dynamic running back who can set up deep shots through play action games, make defenses miss, and catch passes out of the backfield.
Long-term starter Ezekiel Elliot occupied that position, and although though Pollard performed better dividing the workload with Elliot than leading the team last season, he was still a key component of the Dallas Cowboys’ 2023 championship team.
Due to the absence of speculated targets Derrick Henry and Saquon Barkley, there has been a great deal of conjecture over how Dallas will fill the vacancy at running back. Josh Jacobs, Aaron Jones, and D’Andre Swift are among the second wave of starting-caliber backs who have joined new organizations.
The Cowboys’ top two running backs right now are Deuce Vaughn and Rico Dowdle, and when the regular season rolls around, the fan base does not want to witness that.
After Ezekiel Elliott started to deteriorate and eventually leave the team, the Dallas Cowboys have been working to improve their running back position.
The Cowboys, who recently signed Rico Dowdle, now need to add another running back to their roster as the NFL Draft draws near.

Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report has a recommendation, and it involves free agency running back JK Dobbins, a former Baltimore Ravens second-round selection.
In 2020, Dobbins broke out of his shell as a rookie, averaging six yards per carry while running for 805 yards and nine touchdowns.
Although injuries have plagued his early career, he possesses the tools and skill set to be a real elite NFL running back when healthy.
Due to a knee injury that ended the 2021 season, JK Dobbins’ plans for 2022 and 2023 were essentially wrecked. This past year, he made only one appearance in a game.
