The Wanderers are among the strongest teams Reading has faced, according to manager Ruben Selles, after the team lost 5-2 at the Toughsheet Community Stadium.
The Royals scored goals just after the interval through Paul Mukairu and Lewis Wing, but it wasn’t enough to stop a convincing loss on the road.
It was challenging, Selles said. “We played against a really good team, one of the best we played against in the league.”
“We pushed on, trying to have our identity. In the first half, we let a few opportunities for pressure slip by.
We were able to reenter the game at 1-0. The penalty that was called shortly before halftime gave them the advantage over us.We played a solid first twenty to twenty-five minutes of the game, but we adjusted a little in the second half, becoming a little more aggressive.
Maybe the third goal came too soon, but we didn’t give up. We must examine the last section of the game and make it more resilient because the fourth one ended the match.
The second goal for Wanderers came from the penalty spot after Aaron Collins was deemed to have been hauled down in the box by Amadou Mbengue.
Selles said, “I don’t really know, I only watched it a couple of times from the tactical camera,” in response to a question regarding the choice. If it wasn’t a penalty, it wasn’t made clear, and we are unable to modify it.
“Normally, I don’t assess the referee’s rulings, and I won’t start doing so today. However, my player didn’t need to go to the ground.
“I believe he could have avoided being so overly aggressive at that particular moment by being more composed and blocking the shot. Regardless of whether there is a penalty or not, we shouldn’t let the referee make that call.
This type of one-on-one action: don’t let go of the action if it’s necessary. You don’t always have to win. It’s not always necessary to win, but it’s also not always necessary to lose.
