According to a recent Bleacher Report piece, the Falcons, who appear to be looking for an outside cornerback to complement A.J. Terrell, may possibly consider him as a Day 2 target. Kamari Lassiter of Georgia is that possible target.
Bleacher Report notes that “Georgia’s Kamari Lassiter is a speedy and versatile talent, if a tad tiny at 6’0″ and 180 pounds.” “Size and play strength could be concerns early in his career, but he’s a willing tackler and has solid instincts in coverage and run support.”
The Falcons did not keep Jeff Okudah in free agency, despite trading the underperforming former first-round corner to the Detroit Lions for a fifth-round pick last offseason.
After appearing in 13 games for the Falcons before being benched in favor of Clark Phillips late in the season, the former Ohio State Buckeye inked a one-year contract with the Houston Texans.
It wouldn’t hurt to take a chance on a youngster like Lassiter, even though the Falcons may consider Phillips, their fourth-round selection from the previous season, to be Terrell’s outside cornerback partner.
Those who believe the Falcons have long ignored their in-state institution would be satisfied with the selection of the now-former Bulldog. However, Lassiter would add variety to the Falcons squad, just like many other cornerbacks do.
The Savannah, Georgia, native established himself as a two-year starter at outside cornerback, but he also demonstrated his ability to play in the slot, which is the position officially known as.
He demonstrated this last season when he was instructed to follow Luther Burden, the Bulldogs’ leading receiver, during their victory over Missouri. Lassiter’s role as Burden’s shadow meant that he had to follow him everywhere, even if it meant covering him out of the slot, a position the defensive back had never held during a Georgia game.
Even with his limited experience in the role of slot defender, Lassiter was still able to assist Georgia in keeping Missouri’s main target quiet. Burden was only able to get 53 yards and one touchdown on three receptions.
During the team’s most recent NFL Pro Day, Georgia coach Kirby Smart remarked of Lassiter, “He’s going to be a tremendous player, no matter where they play him.” “He is proficient on nickel slots. He is capable of being cautious. He is an expert at balls. He is quite competitive.”
