The 2024 NFL Draft, which is scheduled to take place towards the end of April, is undoubtedly the biggest part of the offseason for the New York Giants. While general manager Joe Schoen completed a trade for Brian Burns with the Carolina Panthers and allowed veterans like Saquon Barkley and Xavier McKinney to leave in free agency, the team has had a very active offseason thus far.
The consensus is that the Giants will select a wide receiver or a quarterback in the draft, so it will be intriguing to watch who they select. But no matter how the board falls, you can never tell where the team is going to finish up.
Joe Alt has a lot of upside and is a tremendously athletic prospect who could end up being one of the top players selected in this year’s draft. But he’s not the right fit for this Giants club.
First of all, Joe Alt would play on the right side, but his experience is primarily on the left side of the line. Andrew Thomas wouldn’t be moved from left tackle in any way. It is often underestimated how difficult it is to switch from left tackle to right tackle.
In addition, the Giants signed free agent Jermaine Eluemunor and still had Evan Neal. At right tackle, those are your two possibilities. In addition, if the Giants hold onto the No. 6 pick, If a quarterback Schoen loves is not available, it is nearly a given that one of the top three wide receivers—Marvin Harrison Jr., Malik Nabers, and Rome Odunze—will be present.
If the Giants go back a few positions, Brian Thomas Jr. would probably be on the roster. If they choose Thomas at No. 6 instead of someone like Harrison, Nabers, or Odunze, it would be shocking. But it appears that a retreat in the opening round is underway.
