Pro Bowl linebacker Josh Allen agreed to a five-year, $150 million contract on Wednesday morning. After Allen signs a long-term contract, he becomes the seventh player who was tagged this offseason to do so. The two remaining tagged players are Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins and Buccaneers safety Antoine Winfield Jr.
Winfield “has been working towards a new deal that would make him the NFL’s highest-paid safety,” according to Schefter, and Tampa Bay is hopeful that the agreement will be reached.
In that scenario, Higgins would be the lone player left who was tagged but did not sign a long-term contract.
When the 25-year-old revealed the team had not yet held discussions regarding a long-term contract extension, he made a trade request in March. In Cincinnati, things might get a little rowdier if he ends up being the lone remaining tagged player.
A trade request from Higgins has not received much attention from the Bengals, especially in light of head coach Zac Taylor’s previous remarks regarding the matter.
Higgins might, nevertheless, threaten to refuse to sign a new contract or to be dealt. With hopes of competing for a Super Bowl in 2024, the Bengals are hoping that doesn’t happen, but as more players who have been flagged receive new contracts, the likelihood of that happening is growing.
Higgins was selected by Cincinnati in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, and he is entitled of one after leading the league in receptions with 257 for 3,684 yards and 24 touchdowns in his first four seasons.
