The striker for Mansfield Town, James Gale, describes his release from Derby County as a youngster as a “sad moment,” but he is thankful for the opportunity to pursue a career in professional football.
The Stags forward made his competitive debut for Nigel Clough’s team this past weekend when they were held goalless in a draw in competitive Two by Sutton United.
When Gale talked about how his parents had helped him get over the disappointment of leaving the Rams, he gave his dad the shirt from his home debut.
Prior to the Stags contacting him 17 months ago, the 21-year-old spent time in non-league ball with Long Eaton. This season, he has made 11 appearances.
Gale also said, “I was at Derby up to U14s and then got released,” to the Mansfield Chad.
We had worked hard for five or six years to get there, so it was a painful moment for my family and me. However, my parents were a huge help in helping me get back on track and concentrate on things in life other than football that are just as vital.I joined the Long Eaton U16s non-league team and quickly made my way up to the first team.
“When I turned eighteen, I didn’t really intend to play football.” All I was doing was playing with my pals.
However, I just kind of turned it on at 19, increased my level of fitness, and when this opportunity presented itself was unable to refuse.
“The demands and pressure of training every day have occasionally been difficult, but overall I have enjoyed it and I want to continue learning from seasoned pros.”
“I believe there will always be opportunities out there for older players who may think their career is over, but it’s not,” said Kevin Phillips, who didn’t start playing professionally until he was about 22.
The day before Mansfield’s match against Sutton, Gale found out he would be starting, and he claimed the other players in the changing room helped calm his anxiety.
“I was informed that I would be starting on Friday, right after training, so I had a full day to prepare myself both physically and mentally.”
“I found it hard to accept that it was fair. This year, I haven’t gotten a lot of playing time, but I’ve been working toward it, and I was prepared to seize the chance when it presented itself.
“I took care to do everything correctly. I ate the correct foods, went to bed at a decent hour, and basically directed my attention there.
“The players talked to me and helped calm my worries, which was very beneficial. Just before kickoff, I was a little nervous, but as soon as I made a few touches and began moving around, I felt good and smart.
