After agreeing to terms with the Miami Dolphins, former sixth-round draft selection Cam Brown of the New York Giants has officially signed as a free agent. On April 17, “A source says that LB Cam Brown is joining the Miami Dolphins. The former Giant finished the previous season with seven ST tackles and was a very good special teams player.
In addition, Brown has played in 60 games for the squad and served as its captain in the past. Prior to the 2022 season, which would be his third with Big Blue, the linebacker/special team player was chosen as one of ten captains. The majority of Brown’s effect with the G-Men came from his role playing in the NFL’s third phase of the game, which is how he won this accolade.
The linebacker made two postseason appearances in addition to 60 games in blue, and he totaled 35 tackles and two forced fumbles. In addition to five more aided ST tackles, Pro Football Focus reports that 21 of those tackles were made on special teams. In his debut season, Brown also had three quarterback hits. During his time with the Giants, he played on the field for 107 defensive snaps overall, as opposed to 1,328 special teams snaps.
Brown was one of two special teams players to post a farewell on social media following the Giants’ offseason split from special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey.
Ironically, linebacker Carter Coughlin, another draft choice and special team member who said goodbye to the Giants with Brown, came back later.
That gave NYG general manager Joe Schoen the opportunity to consider resigning Brown, but it doesn’t seem like that will happen. The core special team member will instead move to the AFC East.
Brown finishes his Giants career with a PFF special teams grade of 64.8, never having finished lower. On April 12, he appeared to be replaced by rookie Matthew Adams.
Brown’s name may now be formally crossed off the list, leaving the Giants with ten unrestricted free agents available to sign. The two main players are unquestionably veteran running back Matt Breida and veteran cornerback Adoree’ Jackson, a former $39 million player. Both players are still needed by the Giants, so neither is certain to go in free agency.
Several former offensive linemen of the New York Giants are still unsigned. These players include Shane Lemieux, a fifth-round draft pick who was unsuccessful, Tyre Phillips, a stand-in right tackle, and two interior reserves in Sean Harlow and J.C. Hassenauer. Justin Pugh is a fan favorite.
2023 additions of veterans Former second-round wide out Sterling Shepard is still available, as are linebackers Jarrad Davis and Randy Bullock. But the squad was very clear that Shepard would not be coming back after the 2023 campaign ended.
Lastly, there are two unrestricted free agents who need to be sorted out. The Giants have not disclosed if restricted free agent guard Wyatt Davis will return in 2024 or if he will have exclusive rights to the position.
