At least from Denver’s end, a Sutton trade has been discussed for some time. The Broncos were interested in a move as far back as last offseason, according to reports from team insider Benjamin Allbright early in the offseason. Then, with the NFL Draft drawing near, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler identified the Steelers as a club to monitor while Sutton was once again up for trade.
When I revealed to them last year that this staff wasn’t as high on Jeudy and Sutton and that I was trying to move them, I encountered resistance everywhere. Subsequently, they attempted to trade Sutton to the Ravens prior to the season and did trade Jeudy for peanuts following the season.
It begs the question of whether the transfer could take place prior to training camp. Why wouldn’t Denver deal Sutton for the choices in the next year if they were genuinely interested in getting rid of him and moving forward with younger wideouts and more cap space? And they ought to be eligible for the same pay whether it’s from this year or the next. He has just $3 million in guaranteed money remaining after taking on just $13 and $13.5 million in salary hits over the next two seasons. It makes sense, and the Steelers ought to be eager to help Denver make a move if that is what they want to do.
