Former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker L.J. Fort has been named the new linebackers coach for Melissa High School in Texas.
Fort joined the Pittsburgh Steelers on August 19, 2015. September 5 marked Fort’s release, and the following day, he was re-signed to the practice squad. In time for the team’s last game, on December 28, he was added to the active roster as a replacement for the injured fullback Roosevelt Nix.[5]
On November 12, 2016, Fort was cut by the Steelers, but three days later, he signed a new contract.[6][7] The Steelers dismissed Fort on September 12, 2017, and the following day, he was signed back to the practice squad.[8] On September 23, 2017, he was added to the active roster.[9]
Who inspires or mentors you in football? One of them is D’Qwell Jackson, who I first saw when I was a rookie in the league. He’s one of the best linebackers ever, and I was his backup. For a few years, he was the league leader in tackles, and in my rookie season, he helped me learn the ropes. Aside from that, one of my all-time favourite players is Charles Woodson. What spurs you on? Above all, God. I am completely inspired by him. My sole purpose in being here is to exalt him. I want to use my ability to be above average in football—which he has blessed me with—to glorify him as I watch this game. How do you approach football? That’s a warrior.
When you get onto the field, you have the chance to punish someone else. Why do you participate in football? I simply love to play, and I feel that not using this gift from God would be a waste of my skill. What football-related moment or memory most brings you joy? The high school football championship we won has the title of my proudest football moment. In the NFL, though, I picked off Michael Vick and sacked him in my first game. Watching Michael Vick as a child made me feel so amazing.
What springs to mind when you hear the words Steelers football? hardness. Jack Lambert comes to mind, along with all those nasty individuals. Joe Greene shoving individuals into the ground, pointing at their faces, and other such actions. It’s amazing. What appeals to you about Pittsburgh? **The fans are really crazy. I’ve been on five different teams, which is crazy. One day, during my first week here, I got into a taxi and the guy asked me my name. I answered, “L.J.” “Oh, L.J. Fort, you just signed to the practice squad?” was his reaction. And I thought, “That’s absurd.”
