In order to guarantee that their new quarterbacks will be protected and that the run game can succeed, the Pittsburgh Steelers acquired four players to their offense in the 2024 NFL Draft, including three offensive lineman. The Steelers selected offensive tackle Troy Fautanu of Washington in the first round. In the second and fourth rounds, respectively, they selected guard Mason McCormick of South Dakota State and center Zach Frazier of West Virginia.
With multiple linemen on the Steelers who are excellent in space when pulling, questions were raised about whether new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith would consider adding more gap-based runs to his typical zone-based run game. Smith stated, “There are certain things [we] want to add when those guys are really comfortable playing in space.” Being stale is not what you desire. We won’t merely print a playbook that was published three or four years prior. As I mentioned earlier, we want to play to the strengths [of the players] but still evolving toward a certain goal. We’re not going to grow boring. There will be plans and quirks that you add every year. Our guiding principles will remain unchanged, but you must adhere to them.
The Matt Canada offensive was criticized for being extremely predictable and lacking in originality and inventiveness. The one thing that can be said about the Arthur Smith offense is that it is open to experimentation, which will undoubtedly be a welcome departure from the Steelers’ prior offensive scheme.
I outlined what to anticipate in the run and passing games, respectively, if you’d like a deeper, more thorough look at the offense the Steelers will play under Smith’s direction.
