The Pittsburgh Steelers held off on choosing the fifth-year options for quarterback Justin Fields and running back Najee Harris until the deadline of May 2, even though they had nearly the whole summer to do so.
The former Ohio State Buckeye was acquired by the Steelers this offseason, so even if they did not choose Fields with the first overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, they do have the opportunity to exercise Fields’ fifth-year option. The Steelers have chosen not to exercise the fifth-year option, however they have forfeited a conditional sixth-round pick that may become a fourth-round pick if specific playing time conditions are fulfilled.
Hence, without an agreement on an extension, Fields will become a free agent in the upcoming offseason rather than having a deal through the 2025 season and earning $25 million. This choice isn’t shocking for a number of reasons, but two in particular. First off, Russell Wilson is the clear favorite to start for the Buckeyes at quarterback, as coach Mike Tomlin has stated ever since the former Ohio State player joined from the Chicago Bears.
Second, Fields’ option pay of $25 million would still exceed his value based on his first three years of performance, even if he were the starter this season. Although Fields’ option was declined by the Steelers, this does not necessarily mean that they do not want to retain him in the long run. Instead, it will enable him to take the bench behind Wilson as the backup quarterback while both parties start discussions about a possible contract extension.
After being cut by the Denver Broncos, the former Super Bowl winner inked a contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason. Like Fields, he will likely be available for grabs again the following offseason. Should Wilson not return, Fields might be Wilson’s backup waiting in the wings for the Steelers. Naturally, assuming all goes according to plan.
