The Blue Jays have even more positive news regarding their pitching staff. Rodríguez is a more intriguing situation, but Green is returning to a more traditional role in which he would pitch frequently in the seventh and roam about to high-leverage spots.
Since a lot can happen between now and Rodríguez’s return, Alek Manoah’s performance as the fifth starter could make Rodríguez an even more appealing bulk relief option, or perhaps he could pitch in a shorter role. However, as a starter, Rodríguez also showed some serious promise, so the Blue Jays can classify this as “a good problem to have.”
On April 30, Rodríguez was placed on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation of his thoracic spine, following the postponement of his Spring Training schedule because of back spasms. On May 13, the right-hander threw a bullpen session in Toronto, which is a positive move. When the time comes, the Blue Jays may use Rodriguez in a hybrid position or develop him back into a starter, but the first step will undoubtedly be a return to the disabled list.
