It goes without saying that Victor Wembanyama has surprised everyone with his performance in his NBA debut season. But when he recently outplayed his younger opponents in a kid’s game, the San Antonio Spurs star elevated things to a new level.
A video clip that Overtime’s official account published just appeared on X. Wembanyama is seen competing in a game with a few teenagers. Then, after blocking many attempts en route to the basket, the Spurs star absolutely destroyed his opponents. It’s unclear at this moment if Wemby was playing as a team with other children or if he was taking on each of them by himself. Still, there’s no denying that the French big man is doing a fantastic job.
Victor Wembanyama needs the San Antonio Spurs to improve around him as soon as possible.
Wembanyama can undoubtedly outplay kids half his size, but the same cannot be said of NBA opponents. The Spurs would do well to assemble a championship-caliber team around this season’s Rookie of the Year, even with his generational caliber of talent inside him.
Throughout the season, Wembanyama averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.2 steals, and 3.6 blocks per game over 71 games. In addition, he made 46% of his field goals, 32% of his 3-pointers, and 79% of his free throws from the line.
In contrast, the Spurs had 22 victories and 60 losses at the end of the regular season. The team ultimately selected with the fourth and eighth picks in this year’s NBA Draft as a result. It will be interesting to watch if San Antonio packages those picks with current assets in order to acquire a star, or if they are used to select two young rookies who can complement Wemby. In either case, the front office’s use of those selections will require extreme caution.
What actions San Antonio will take to surround Wemby with a strong enough starting lineup is unknown at this time. One thing is certain, though: the front management needs to move quickly to prevent its valued star from getting upset.
