In light of Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds’ pursuit of players, Phil Parkinson has provided an update on Wrexham’s present position in the transfer market. In addition to Wrexham getting ready for a League One campaign, the transfer market is quickly coming.
Nine first-team players, including Luke Young and Ben Tozer, will be leaving, but Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds will give Phil Parkinson the money he needs to reinforce his club.
Discussions over a concrete move have been slow-moving, as Wrexham waits to enter the market in preparation for the June 14 window opening. If Wrexham wants to compete in the third division, they will need to recruit a number of quality players to their roster, mainly at the goalie, center back, left back, central midfield, and striker positions. The competition is fierce, especially with major clubs Huddersfield and Birmingham City relegating from the Championship, and the Reds are on a more even playing field than in League Two.
Wrexham’s current transfer plan is shared by Phil Parkinson.
Despite Parkinson’s disclosure, many people anticipate that Wrexham will pay top dollar for players due to the financial clout of Hollywood owners McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds. The 56-year-old, who has already seen two promotions from this level, says the Welsh team is currently searching the market for players on free transfers and those whose contracts expire in one year.
In an interview with The Leader, Parkinson acknowledged that Wrexham has the same purchasing power as the teams around them and that, unlike in the past, no club has inflated a player’s price in the fourth division. Parkinson stated, “We haven’t reached the summer conversation point where we’re discussing fees and stuff like that.” Only players without contracts and those with one year remaining are being considered. Of course, we completed a ton of homework in the weeks prior as well. I haven’t really felt like people are trying to inflate the price at the moment because it is reasonable given the clubs we will be competing with for those players.
