Several purple fans, including yourself, were afraid that a team would select quarterback J.J. McCarthy in the top ten before the Minnesota Vikings could acquire him after it became evident that they would not give up a lot to move up in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. We can see that was very close to happening thanks to a recent NFL film.
We have a behind-the-scenes look at some conversations between the New York Jets and the Los Angeles Rams that occurred when the Jets were on the clock at #10 overall, in conjunction with the premiere of the new league documentary NFL Draft: The Pick Is In. The Rams made the Jets an offer for both their first-round pick, at #19 overall, and their second-round pick, at #52, according to the video. After giving it some thought, the head staff of the Jets calls Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and company in Minnesota to make the offer that the Jets finally accepted in order to move up one slot. The Jets apparently determined that dropping all the way to #19 would be too much to bear.
Now, I’m not positive if McCarthy was the Rams’ intended target in their attempt to move up, but I do know that the Vikings selected him at number ten. After McCarthy became the fifth quarterback selected in the first ten rounds, Bo Nix was selected by the Denver Broncos at number twelve. If the Vikings had not been able to close the trade, they might have been forced to draft Nix or no quarterback at all in the 2024 NFL Draft because the next quarterback was not expected to be selected until the 170s. That is, if the Rams were trying to trade up for McCarthy.
Especially when it comes to events like the NFL Draft, I always like taking a peek behind the scenes at how the NFL operates. Now,We are aware of how dangerously near the Vikings were to a disastrous first-round performance this year.
