The wounded bullpen of the Seattle Mariners is about to get some relief. Gregory Santos, a right-hander who has been out since March due to a right lat strain, made significant progress in his recovery on Saturday by throwing a 30-pitch bullpen session.
More importantly, according to manager Scott Servais, Santos reported feeling well on Sunday morning. Servais seldom goes to watch his pitchers in the bullpen at T-Mobile Park, but he made an effort to go for Santos’ first prolonged throwing session. Servais was pleased with what he saw. I’m thrilled,” he declared. The 24-year-old Santos pitched a “up-down” bullpen, which entailed throwing 15 pitches before taking a few minutes to relax.
Servais stated, “He’s definitely trending [in the right direction].” Although Santos’ return is not officially scheduled, it is hoped that he will be able to enter the Mariners’ bullpen by early to mid-July. Servais stated that his next move will be to give hitters a live batting practice, and that should happen during the next week while on the forthcoming road trip. After that, Santos will most likely require a few rehab appearances in the minor leagues. For the previous two weeks, the Mariners’ bullpen has been severely limited. Andrés Muñoz is still dealing with a tight lower back, and Gabe Speier, a left-hander, has been on the injured list since May 30 due to a left rotator cuff issue.
