Despite spending the previous season on loan from Premier League runners-up Arsenal, Arthur Okonkwo proved to be a huge popular with the Wrexham supporters. The team that was promoted to EFL League One has the 22-year-old goalie as a key member. In all competitions, he made 40 appearances and led Wrexham to second place while maintaining 16 clean sheets.
In addition, Okonkwo received additional personal distinction when he and Reds teammate Elliot Lee were named to the League Two Team of the Season. The announcement that Okonkwo had signed a three-year contract after being released by Arsenal over the weekend was wonderful news for the team’s supporters. However, it appears that many of the Gunners will not quickly forget him. Both former and current Arsenal players extended their best wishes to Okonkwo upon learning that he will be “saying goodbye.”
Okonkwo stated, “Arsenal will always be special to me,” in the Instagram post. Bukayo Saka, who scored 20 goals for Arsenal in all competitions just last season, commented underneath his post and said, “Go shine bro.”
Ian Wright, the legendary striker who led Arsenal to 185 goals, said: “I appreciate your time. I wish you all the success that your hard work has earned. Okonkwo initially enrolled in the Arsenal academy at the age of eight, and he would later spend fifteen years there. Additionally, even after departing, he will remain closely connected to the north London club because his younger brother Brian, a goalie, is still a member of the academy.
