With monetary considerations, the Brewers acquired former Cy Young winner Dallas Keuchel from the Mariners to bolster their pitching depth. In the four seasons since 2022, Keuchel has not had an ERA below five. He has pitched for five different teams between 2022 and 2023.
Following his offseason signing of a minor league contract with Seattle, he has been pitching for the Mariners Triple-A affiliate in Tacoma, Washington, this year. Over his 13 starts with Tacoma this season, the seasoned left-hander has a 7-4 record and a 3.93 ERA. That follows five appearances with a 1.61 ERA. With a 57 percent ground ball rate during his career, Keuchel has also been successful at getting outs.
This year in the minors, the southpaw’s groundball rate is above 50% once more. Baseball Reference states that Keuchel’s career major league average is 43.75. Due to injuries to starters DL Hall, Wade Miley, Robert Gasser, and Joe Ross (15-day disabled list), Milwaukee needs assistance with pitching. Although they haven’t formally announced Keuchel’s assignment, the Brewers benched Collin Rea for Wednesday’s afternoon game against Texas. With the Rangers listed as TBA, they currently have the starting pitcher for the series finale.
