The coming day and change will be excruciating for coach Dan Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes of the er. Even with a 16-man practice squad, that means at least 21 men—if not more—will no longer be employed by the Lions by the end of the week after 90 players sacrificed their blood, sweat, and tears over the course of the previous month. The Lions must decide to eliminate 37 players in an instant.
We attempted to imagine ourselves in the roles of Holmes and Campbell on this week’s PODcast. Many of these choices will be really simple. It will be harder than ever for many of them. With an even more talented roster, It implies that some players the Lions cut will later contribute significantly to a different squad. We therefore tackled the most difficult choice on the Lions roster and determined our IN vs. OUT choices for the 53-man squad. If you would want to jump to a specific debate, below is the timestamp for each one:
6:30 — Jake Fromm’s unlikely chance at the 53, and a look at backup quarterback Nate Sudfeld.
14:30 — Is Isaiah Williams need to be retained?
20:10 — Can Jermar Jefferson possibly be added to the roster?
23:10 — Three-way scramble at the finish
Kingsley Eguakun: IN or OUT at 28:00?
38:00 — James Houston and EDGE’s difficult choices
46:50 — Considering the high injury rate, how many DBs will they retain? What effect will Ifeatu Melifonwu’s injury have on choices?
52:40 — Does Ben Niemann justify holding onto an LB6? Has Ty Summers gained any traction in the discussion?
56:50 — At this point, how worried are we about Jake Bates?
