Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin will have another opportunity to work with a rookie quarterback when the Steelers play the Broncos on Sunday. Tomlin will play a first-year signal-caller in his thirty-first game of the career.
This time, it will be 12th overall pick in the 2024 draft Bo Nix who falls prey.
Tomlin’s record with rookie quarterbacks is 24-6. I attempted to predict the six that defeated Tomlin earlier this week with Myles Simmons based just on the years of the losses. Our effort was not very good, as the accompanying clip shows. The years that Tomlin lost to a rookie quarterback are as follows: 2023 twice, 2016 twice, 2012, and 2007. Feel free to give it a shot. That took place twice in the previous year. In Week 4, C.J. Stroud and the Texans defeated the Steelers 30–6. Then, in Week 11, they were defeated 13–10 by the Browns and Dorian Thompson–Robinson (!).
Two more defeats against rookie quarterbacks occurred in 2016. In Week 3, Carson Wentz and the Eagles destroyed the Steelers 34-3. Dak Prescott and the Cowboys defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 35-30 in Week 10. It was Brandon Weeden (! ) and the Browns, Week 12 at Cleveland, 20-14, four years prior. It was Troy Smith(!) and the Ravens in Weeks 17, 27, and 21, five years prior. The new Browns and old Browns quarterbacks faced them in half of the games. Furthermore, the aforementioned quarterbacks’ careers weren’t exactly Hall of Fame-caliber.
