The New York Giants have discovered some silver linings despite their 2-5 start. No one has been as impressive than their rookie class of 2024. With his exceptional output, receiver Malik Nabers speaks for himself. Perhaps more than the other players in the class, however, cornerback Dru Phillips has been a welcome surprise.
Phillips was drafted with the intention of being a plug-and-play starter, and he has done just that. He has become the team’s best defensive back despite early injury struggles. That could lead to a more expansive role. New York had a slot corner position following veteran corner Cor’Dale Flott’s struggles inside the previous season. The position was thus up for grabs, and Phillips complied.
Phillips has dominated the job after an odd lack of playing time in Week 1. However, Phillips may get the chance to see action on the boundary given the injuries to Tre Hawkins III, Adoree Jackson, and Flott. Shane Bowen, the defensive coordinator, is amenable to the concept. “I believe so. “Yes,” Bowen replied. “He is capable of doing all of that. Once more, he is a young man, so we should be careful not to put too much on him and ask him what he can manage within the framework. But of course. I believe he is capable of doing all of that.
In addition to producing even more ground game plays that aren’t included in the box score, he has recorded a forced fumble, a sack, and six tackles for loss. However, it didn’t appear that head coach Brian Daboll was keen to transfer the rookie from his natural position. “No, I’d say we’ll take a look at some things here today based on who’s down for practice,” Daboll replied. “And again, we’ll evaluate that as we go.”
