Next season, the quarterbacks’ room for the Buffalo Bills will appear rather different. Josh Allen, the team’s starting quarterback for the foreseeable future, is hanging on, while Kyle Allen, his backup from the 2022 NFL season, is going on.
According to ESPN’s Brook Pryor, general manager of the Pittsburgh Steelers Omar Khan announced the team would be signing Kyle Allen during the NFL’s annual meeting in Orlando, Florida. Summer Juraszek, Kyle’s fiancée, shared the good news on Instagram shortly after it was announced.
After a year, Summer and Kyle are no strangers to moving to a new city. Kyle has played for the Houston Texans, Washington Commanders, and Carolina Panthers since joining the NFL in 2018.
Allen has completed his passing for 4,734 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 21 interceptions in 23 game appearances, 19 of which were starts.
Kyle made seven brief appearances in Buffalo without recording any stats, but he never earned a start. He will now travel to the Steelers, where he will be in the quarterbacks room with Justin Fields and Russell Wilson.
In March of last year, Kyle agreed to a one-year, $1.2 million contract with the Bills. The 28-year-old’s transfer to Buffalo was facilitated in large part by his personal friendship with Josh, since the Bills star quarterback values good chemistry in the quarterbacks’ room. The closest buddies have taken several romantic trips together. Summer grew close to Josh’s girlfriend Hailee Steinfeld throughout the previous season.
Speaking to reporters the previous year, Allen was questioned if Josh had anything to do with getting him to Buffalo. Tanner Gentry, a former wide receiver for the Buffalo Bills, easily acknowledged that Josh had. The former undrafted quarterback claims that the opposite actually occurred.
He stated, “I believe Josh is at the top of the list.” In addition to being a wonderful buddy, he is among the top quarterbacks in the NFL overall. And he executes it correctly. There are also a ton of other variables.
In my NFL career, I have genuinely respected this team. We’ve probably played them three or four times already. Every time, it’s just been a rough, uncompromising game.
We have also performed in Buffalo. Simply the intensity of the crowd, the stadium, and how difficult it is to come in here and prevail. All I wanted was to take part in anything similar.
“I didn’t have to present (to Josh) much,” he grinned broadly. “That’s about it; I’m probably going to beat him in golf now.” The NFL veteran, however, claimed Buffalo was “always a target.”
Despite having a terrible training camp, Kyle eventually defeated Matt Barkley to win the backup position. The two Allens are no longer teammates, but they will probably stay close. They went on a boys’ golf outing together only last week.
It almost feels like a trade with Kyle going to Pittsburgh and former Steelers quarterback Mitch Trubisky taking his place. The former No. 2 overall selection in the 2017 NFL Draft departed the Bills amicably.
Things didn’t go well once he signed up with the Steelers as their new starting quarterback. His tenure as a starter was short lived as he inked a $14.25 million, two-year contract that contained up to $27 million in incentives.
Pittsburgh benched Trubisky in favor of rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett by week five of the 2022 NFL season. After Pickett’s ankle injury from the previous season, Trubisky started two more games, going 0–2. Mason Rudolph, the quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, took his position and went 3-0 to secure the team’s postseason berth.
Although Trubisky had “a few spots” in mind for potential travel destinations, he told reporters that going back to Buffalo was his primary choice. The 29-year-old claimed that it “just felt like a no-brainer” to “join a contender” and get back together with Josh.
Trubisky and the Bills agreed to a two-year, $5.25 million deal, including a guaranteed $2.7 million.
