Dr. Keith Meister assessed right-handed starter Spencer Strider in Dallas on Monday, but the Braves aren’t quite ready to share the results of their meeting just yet.
Manager Brian Snitker told reporters prior to the team’s Tuesday game that no information will be released until the weekend. He did, however, disclose that the Braves star’s chances of needing surgery were not eliminated by the visit. Snitker added that Strider’s medical team in Atlanta is currently creating a schedule for what comes next for him. In February of 2019, Strider, a sophomore at Clemson University, had Tommy John surgery.
He reported feeling soreness in his elbow after giving up five runs on seven hits in four innings during Friday night’s 6-5 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks for Atlanta.
After receiving an MRI, which showed that Strider’s pitching elbow had a sprained ulnar collateral ligament, the player was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Sunday.
Since making his MLB debut in 2021, the 25-year-old has established himself as one of the game’s best pitchers. In 329.2 innings pitched, he has 495 strikeouts and a 3.47 ERA for his career. He was the MLB leader in strikeouts and victories in 2023.
His elbow injury has become the focal point of a major baseball pitching injury epidemic. Elbow injuries have also hampered Nick Pivetta, Framber Valdez, Eury Perez, and Shane Bieber, among other starters.
