British football history began in 1979 when Francis was signed by legendary Nottingham Forest manager Brian Clough for a cool £1 million. Francis went on to help Forest win two European Cups in a row, an achievement never before accomplished by an English team. He also scored the game-winning goal in the first final matchup against Malmo.

Francis secured a contract to play for Rangers when he returned to the UK in 1987. He only stayed at Ibrox for one season before leaving to take a player-manager position at QPR.

After that, he signed with Sheffield Wednesday, replacing Ron Atkinson as manager, and guided the Owls to a third-place finish in the top division in 1992.

The next season, Wednesday was led by Francis to both cup finals, when they were defeated twice by Arsenal. He gave up playing in 1994, and the Hillsborough club fired him the following year.
