Though only 27 years old, Ashtyn Davis has already established himself as a special player on the New York Jets in previous seasons. Davis was originally selected in the third round.
Before, Davis was only considered a special teams star, but he has developed into a stronger defender. In interceptions and passes defended, he recorded career highs last season. The previous season, he shown his ability to perform well under pressure as he made major plays on a top-five unit.
This is the reason Davis signed a new contract and returned to the Jets this summer after experimenting with the free agent market.
But Davis won’t settle for coming back to New York to play third safety alongside Chuck Clark and Tony Adams. The Santa Cruz native is worthy of an opportunity to contend for a starting position despite having four years of little beginning experience for several reasons.
First off, Davis enters following a stellar 2023 season, in contrast to Adams and Clark. His outstanding Pro Football Focus score of 74.7 was among the top on the team and demonstrated his ability to perform at a high level even behind All-Pros like Quincy Williams and Sauce Gardner.
Additionally, he received a rating six points higher than that of Adams, the team’s real starting safety from August until the end of the campaign. Despite having fewer passes defended and allowing a higher completion percentage in coverage (65.5 percent compared to 57.1 percent), Adams’ number of interceptions may have been equal to Davis’.
Naturally, Clark was sidelined last season after injuring his ACL during the last few days of organized team activities.
