After being reinstated after serving a year-long gambling suspension, Quintez Cephus, a former fifth-round wide receiver selection of the Detroit Lions, has signed with the Buffalo Bills, according to his agency.
A little more than a year ago, the Lions suspended Cephus and swiftly cut him go, ending his three-season tenure with the team. Ever since the Bills traded for Stefon Diggs and lost Gabe Davis to the Jacksonville Jaguars in free agency, they have been pursuing receivers.
After being selected by the Lions in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Cephus, now 26 years old, spent three seasons in Detroit, where he caught 37 catches for 568 yards and four touchdowns. After breaking the NFL’s gambling rules last year, he received an indefinite suspension and was cut by the Lions.
Cephus, however, was given his new team last week after being restored. On a club that needs some wide receiver help, he’ll fight for a roster spot, and his chances of making the squad seem reasonable.
After serving an indeterminate suspension for breaking the league’s gambling policy, Cephus was cut loose by the Lions in April 2023. Cephus and four other players had their gambling bans lifted by the NFL last week.
In April of last year, Cephus was one of five players, including current Lions receiver Jameson Williams and safety C.J. Moore, punished for breaking the NFL’s gambling rules. The players were given different suspension terms; Cephus’ was indefinite.
Cephus might have signed with any team after being allowed to return.
