Despite being bitten by the injury bug frequently, it appears that the Boston Red Sox will have a member of their starting rotation return next week.
Manager Alex Cora gave a good update on Garrett Whitlock during his weekly segment on WEEI’s “Jones & Mego With Arcand.” He stated, “I think he’ll start a game in Tampa if everything goes well over the next few days.” Starting on May 20, the Red Sox go to the Rays for a three-game series.
Whitlock, who has had an oblique strain and has been out since mid-April, started a rehab game with the Worcester Red Sox on Wednesday morning at Polar Park. Throughout his 4 ⅔ innings, he struck out five while giving up just two hits and zero runs. Among his 61 pitches, 40 were strikes.
The right-hander expressed his satisfaction with his outing to media following Worcester’s 1-0 loss to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, saying that “everything felt good.”
Regarding Triston Casas, who is recovering from a rib cartilage injury, Cora reported that the first baseman has been adhering to his regimen, attending meetings, and watching videos. Wednesday night at Fenway Park, the Red Sox resume their four-game series against the Rays with hopes of winning two straight.
