As Phil Parkinson gets ready to take the team into League One the next season, Wrexham supporters can anticipate a summer of change. Parkinson has skillfully overseen two consecutive promotions, and Wrexham is currently getting ready for life in League One.
Wrexham hasn’t played in League One in almost 20 years, and despite their quick ascent, there is still much work to be done. Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds will have to investigate the club’s infrastructure in order to maintain and upgrade the STōK Cae Ras and organize a training facility. Fans will be anticipating the transfer window as well, since Wrexham will surely be adding new players to help them adjust to life in League One. With some players set to be released this summer, Wrexham has already begun to make place for new arrivals.
Paul Mullin is awaiting word on Wrexham’s captain.
Ben Tozer and Luke Young, two important stalwarts in Wrexham’s ascent, have left the team when their contracts expired. That’s two seasoned performers going out of business and two leaders moving on to new opportunities.
This puts the decision of who will captain Wrexham in Phil Parkinson’s hands. We witnessed the two of them win the National League trophy together the previous season. Young is the current captain of Wrexham, while Tozer is the vice captain. Paul Mullin, the third captain of the Wrexham team, would go next.
This past season, the 29-year-old commanded Wrexham in 10 games, including six of the final eight contests. Mullin accepted the armband since Tozer and Young were unable to secure starting positions in the closing minutes of the season. Given that Parkinson has recently appeared to be pleased to give Mullin the armband, Mullin is now the overwhelming favorite to take over as Wrexham’s new captain. Without a question, Mullin would adore being appointed the Wrexham captain going forward, but he must first wait to hear from Parkinson about his promotion to that position.
Who else might be in the running?
Although we would be shocked if someone other than Mullin was named captain, Parkinson does have additional choices. One shout goes out to defender Eoghan O’Connell, an Irishman who was voted Rochdale’s club captain back in 2020. The 28-year-old may be Mullin’s backup or the captain because he has a ton of experience and is used to carrying the armband. Midfielders George Evans, Andy Cannon, and Elliot Lee are all excellent candidates and have a ton of experience.
Prior to joining Wrexham, James McClean served as the captain of the Republic of Ireland and was a member of the Wigan Athletic leadership group. Ironically, Will Boyle succeeded Ben Tozer as Cheltenham Town captain in 2021, demonstrating his leadership abilities as well. Parkinson’s team has a few true leaders, and before the transfer window closes, there might be more. Mullin is the front-runner, but after assembling a team that has been through so much together, Parkinson may find it difficult to even select a new vice captain.
