It seems that the Los Angeles Dodgers are beginning to rethink their decision to stick with infielder Gavin Lux as their starting shortstop.
The team had stated early in the spring that Lux would be the starting shortstop for the group. But after Lux’s unimpressive defensive performance at spring training, it doesn’t seem like he has the job.
Dave Roberts, the manager of the Dodgers, stopped being absolute when asked on Thursday who will start at shortstop on Opening Day.
According to Roberts, “performance is obviously paramount at this level, and for our team vying to win a championship,” as reported by Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic. I’m not sure what will happen, but I do know that it will follow the strategy that will offer us the best chance of succeeding.
Prior to sustaining an ACL tear while sprinting the basepaths in the previous spring, Lux was also anticipated to take over as the starting shortstop.
Lux hit.276 and slugged in 2022, his finest hitting season to date.399 over 129 games, including 42 runs scored, six home runs, and 42 RBI. With seven triples that season, Lux equaled Amed Rosario, the shortstop for the New York Mets at the time, for the most in the National League.
Miguel Rojas, an infielder with the Dodgers, replaced Lux in 121 games at shortstop last season. He might get another chance at the position this season. Even though Rojas has a great glove at short, the 35-year-old has had two poor seasons in a row at bat.
