Super-utility player Cavan Biggio was added by the Los Angeles Dodgers to their roster following his designation for assignment by the Toronto Blue Jays last week.
Right-handed reliever Braydon Fisher, who has divided his season between Double-A and Triple-A, gets acquired by the Blue Jays in the trade. Biggio batted eighth and played third base in the Dodgers’ home game against the Texas Rangers on Wednesday night. Biggio, 29, struggled during the first three months of the season and was removed from the Blue Jays’ 40-man roster last week. In 131 plate appearances, he hit.200/.323/.291 with two home runs for Toronto, which at 33-34 is in third place in the American League East.
Although he has played first base, third base, and right field this season, he has spent the majority of his career at second base. Biggio will be joining a Dodgers club that leads the National League West by seven and a half games. However, the team has not produced much offensively despite having Chris Taylor, Gavin Lux, and Kiké Hernández on the roster, and Max Muncy, their third baseman, is out with a strained oblique.
Along with shortstop Bo Bichette and infielder Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Biggio made his major league debut in 2019. The three sons of former major league players were supposed to form the foundation of a rising Blue Jays team. He appeared to be a cornerstone at second base as he smacked 16 home runs in 100 games during his rookie season and finished the COVID-shortened 2020 season with a.375 on-base percentage.
Biggio’s career was hampered by injuries in the following years, and this season, Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Davis Schneider got more playing time than him. The Blue Jays DFA’d him in order to make place for Spencer Horwitz, who has started all four games at second base since being called up due to their offensive struggles. After this season, Biggio will be under club control for one more season before becoming a free agent in 2025. The 23-year-old Fisher, selected in the fourth round of the 2018 MLB Draft, has a 5.68 ERA this season after walking 15 and striking out 30 batters in 19 innings.
