For the first time since the 1990s, the New York Knicks have cause for excitement as they prepare for the upcoming NBA season and appear to be serious contenders for a title. Still, they have some work to do before they can officially announce their roster.

The Knicks currently only have Mitchell Robinson, a beast on the boards and dependable shot-blocker, as their real center. However, Robinson has a history of injuries. He has only played in at least 70 games once in his six NBA seasons, and due to an ankle injury this past season, he only played in 31 games. Capela is an excellent rebounder and shot blocker, making him a valuable asset to New York. At thirty, he’s also a lob danger with considerable experience.
In his ten NBA seasons, he has averaged 12.3 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game. He has also made eight trips to the playoffs. With one year remaining on his little over $22 million contract, Capela is a free agent. The Knicks will need to consider what they would have to give up in order to get him, as well as whether they can re-sign him to a longer deal in order to keep him beyond the 2024–25 campaign.
