St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Lance Lynn, who has had a remarkable season, has been placed on the 15-day injured list due to irritation in his right knee. While tending to a knee ailment, Lynn pitched five innings of one-run ball Wednesday night against the Texas Rangers, the defending World Series champions. Lynn was reportedly limping “quite a bit” following his historic victory on Tuesday, according to Katie Woo of The Athletic. Now that he has faced every MLB team, the seasoned pitcher is the 23rd pitcher with a win.
Reunited with his previous squad in the summer, the 37-year-old Lynn has been a reliable addition to the Cardinals lineup. With 21 starts for St. Louis, he is a two-time All-Star. With 97 strikeouts in 106 ⅓ innings, he has a 4.06 ERA. As he hobbled around the clubhouse, Lynn realized his knee injury was “pretty serious,” according to MLB.com’s John Denton. It’s yet unknown if he had imaging tests. St. Louis is hopeful that Lynn can recuperate with rest and rehabilitation, though. Lynn is merely the most recent setback to an injury-plagued Cardinals rotation that once featured just four starts. Erick Fedde, a recently acquired righty, will take Lynn’s place in the starting rotation. Similar to Lynn, Fedde is experiencing a comeback season with the Chicago White Sox, recording a 3.11 ERA in 21 starts. Michael McGreevy, a pitching prospect, made his Major League debut on Wednesday after having his contract selected on Tuesday.
With Lynn out, manager Oliver Marmol may decide to keep reliever Andre Pallante in the lineup instead of moving him to the bullpen. The Cardinals moved players around on the roster on Wednesday in addition to adding Lynn to the 15-day injury list. Chris Roycroft, a right-hander, was optioned by St. Louis to Triple-A Memphis, where he was replaced by Ryan Loutos. Right-hander Jacob Bosiokovic has been designated for assignment in order to clear space on the 40-man roster.
