The majority of Cowboys supporters proclaimed their club the Super Bowl winners following their season-opening victory over Cleveland. Their doors were simply pounded on by reality. The Super Bowl this year could still go to the Dallas Cowboys. However, not by performing as they did in their 44-19 loss to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, their home opener.
The Cowboys’ defense did not perform as expected; it was uncannily identical to their dismal performance against the Packers in January 2023. That’s two home games in a row where the defense was completely outclassed in the first half. By the half, both games were pretty much over. The Fewest Points Scored Prescott was able to get some points on Sunday, at least against the Saints. In addition to throwing an interception that was turned into a Saints touchdown, he only managed one touchdown. Prescott did score 16 points in the first half, but 12 of those came from Brandon Aubrey’s foot. Derek Carr, meanwhile, was leading the Saints to five touchdowns in the first half, which gave them a 35-16 advantage at the intermission.
In the second half, Dallas got the ball first, just like in the Packers game. They had the opportunity to offer the defense something to strive for, if nothing else. Still, the first drive of the second half concluded with another field goal from Brandon Aubrey, just like it did back in January. Dallas would come no closer than that the rest of the way. That is not the reason the Cowboys paid a quarter of a billion dollars. Right now, Prescott is the NFL’s highest-paid player.
