Breaking News: Georgia Bulldogs finally update the awaiting star

The Bulldogs are now in the driver’s seat when it comes to capturing an SEC Championship and a National Championship, according to the general consensus following Georgia’s victory over No. 1 Texas on Saturday. Even if that might still be the case for a National Championship, Georgia still requires assistance in order to have a shot at an SEC Championship.

SEC teams that have not lost
The two top teams in the conference standings will now be the two delegates to compete for an SEC title as the SEC no longer has divisions. Furthermore, Georgia is still outside of the top two teams in the league rankings despite their significant victory over Texas. With records of 4-0 and 3-0, respectively, Texas A&M and LSU are both unbeaten and, if they win their remaining SEC games, they would go to the SEC championship game before Georgia. The good news for Georgia is that they play each other this weekend, so a loss would tie them with Georgia and add to their SEC record. However, that regrettably does not imply that Georgia is guaranteed a spot in Atlanta.

Different Types of Tiebreakers
Head-to-head games are the first tiebreaker used to decide which teams travel to Atlanta to compete for an SEC Championship title. Since Georgia doesn’t face Texas A&M or LSU, as you are undoubtedly fully aware, what is the second tiebreaker?  Texas A&M and LSU both have undefeated records (4-0 and 3-0, respectively), and if they win their remaining SEC games, they will go to the SEC championship game ahead of Georgia. A defeat would tie them with Georgia and improve their SEC record, which is fortunate for Georgia because they face each other this weekend. Unfortunately, though, that does not mean that Georgia will automatically get a spot in Atlanta.

Different Tiebreaker Types
The first criteria used to determine which teams go to Atlanta to play for an SEC Championship title is head-to-head play. As you are obviously well known, Georgia does not play Texas A&M or LSU, then what is the second tiebreaker?
Because it all relies on which conference opponent Georgia and Texas A&M/LSU play, it is difficult to predict this tiebreaker at this time. Let’s hope it doesn’t get to this stage because anything might happen if it comes down to this tiebreaker.

For what reason should Georgia supporters cheer?
Ultimately, Georgia just needs to concentrate on themselves. If they lose another game, none of these tiebreakers apply, so as long as Georgia prevails, everything should be resolved. Beyond Georiga, however, UGA supporters should wish that the team that loses this weekend’s Texas A&M vs. LSU match will lose another SEC game at the end of the season.
