With just over two weeks until MLB Opening Day, J.D. Martinez is still a free agent. It appears like at least two teams are pursuing the slugger.

Martinez and the New York Mets are interested in each other, according to a Tuesday story by Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Although the front management has been given clearance by owner Steve Cohen to seriously pursue Martinez, the Mets would have to pay a 110 percent luxury tax on any new additions.

Heyman revealed in a different piece that Martinez had spoken with the Los Angeles Angels about a contract. They also reportedly share a mutual interest with Martinez.

Martinez, 36, is said to have been looking for a two-year contract. He is being selective, at least to some extent, as he already declined a contract offer from one team.

Martinez has the makings of a great designated hitter and is coming off a successful season with the Los Angeles Dodgers. 36-year-old struck out.In 2023, 271 with 33 home runs and 103 RBI. According to a recent report, he has reportedly held discussions with an NL playoff team.
