Marcus Maye, a safety, was cut by the New Orleans Saints, but that doesn’t mean he can’t be a useful member of a club. Every club tinkers with the wage cap to some degree, but none goes as far as New Orleans does. The team never rebuilds; instead, they always reorganize transactions so they never have to start from zero. Regrettably, this has the unintended consequence of producing a significant amount of dead money, forcing the Saints to remove talented players whose wages were excessive in order to stay under the salary ceiling.
This particular iteration of team building cost Marcus Maye, as New Orleans let go of the veteran and added him to an already crowded free agency safety market. Dianna Russini notes that the former Saint is “drawing interest” from several organizations and even has a visit set with one squad, despite the position having a plenty of playmakers.
